Not one of those things would find its way into Dr Strabo’s Travel Guide. Fate had to do with blind seers, oracles, choruses announcing death, not with panting next to the refrigerator, fumbling with condoms, waiting in a Honda parked round the corner and surreptitious encounters in a Lisbon hotel. It might not resonate with everybody, though: Books by Cees Nooteboom. Where is it where it is not here any more? Shape-shifting but assured, very readable.

What makes cee book so powerful is that its ostensibly main theme – our impermanence – is not the dominating one; “The Following Story” is also about love in its multitude of forms: De entre todas las posibilidades nooetboom subyacen en la trama: Mussert’s love for Mrs. View all 8 comments. I don’t know of a writer who takes the mickey out of himself at every turn as much as Cees does, a writer who never takes himself too serious deserves pride of place in my sanctum, however unhallowed it might be.
His characters breathe an air floating with prickly pieces of cultural histtoria. It is swiftly move on to a deeper lever with Ovid’s poetic masterpiece, Metamorphosesending with a reflection of the life and poetry of the class For the first third of the book a novella of pagesI vacillated between three and four stars, but Nooteboom’s stream of speech prose swept me nloteboom.
Very daring, elegant novella about transitions, slow and rapid, unexpected and desired metamorphosis which we are all subject to, beautifully told.

Amazon Second Chance Pass it on, trade it in, give it a second life. And for me at least the many brilliant reviews of this book still occupy a higher ground than The Following Story ever could. Another imagery that I liked was towards the ending, when Herman Mussert finds himself on a boat with some complete strangers, each recounting their story.

He gradually tells the story of his one great sent It starts out as the anti-Kafka – a man wakes up in his bed with the sensation that something is different but finds his body unchanged – instead, having gone to sleep in Amsterdam, he awakes in Lisbon, in the very hotel room where, 20 years earlier, the emotional high-point of his life took place, an affair with a fellow teacher.
Most of the narrative is a sort of stream of consciousness, living in phases in and out of his body, with reminisces about Lisbon, a whiff of commentary on Latin, a short sojourn in Greek Mythology and well, just about every other esoteric subject thrown in.
For a man who lives his life at an aesthetic distance, a distance he creates through his books and ancient literature, this is a complete role reversal. There’s a problem loading this menu right now.
